Flu Season in Dubai: 5 Steps from Prevention to Recovery

Flu season in Dubai: do you know what steps to take?

Flu season in the UAE usually builds from October and runs through the cooler months. Air-conditioned offices, busy school runs and constant travel through Dubai give influenza plenty of chances to spread.

Most healthy adults recover within one to two weeks. But flu can lead to complications such as pneumonia, and it can worsen existing conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart disease. That is why the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) asks healthcare providers to check flu vaccination status at every visit this season.

At NovaWell Healthcare Clinic, we think about flu care as a journey with five steps: prevent, assess, treat, hydrate and recover. Here is what each one means for you and your family.

Step 1: Prevent — get your flu vaccine in Dubai early

An annual flu vaccine is one of the most effective ways to lower your risk of influenza and its complications. The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention recommends yearly vaccination for everyone aged six months and above, unless there is a medical reason not to.

Protection from the vaccine fades over time, and circulating strains change. That is why a new shot is needed every season.

Who should prioritise the flu shot?

DHA guidance particularly recommends annual flu vaccination for:

  • Pregnant women, in any trimester

  • Children aged six months to five years

  • Adults aged 65 and over

  • People with chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease

  • Healthcare workers

  • Anyone living with or caring for someone with a weakened immune system, or a baby under six months

Can the flu vaccine give you flu?

No. DHA confirms that inactivated flu vaccines cannot cause influenza. A sore arm or feeling slightly tired for a day is a normal immune response, not infection.

Everyday hygiene habits that help

  • Wash and dry your hands regularly

  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and bin tissues straight away

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth

  • Stay home when you feel unwell, and keep your distance from people who are sick

Step 2: Assess — know your flu symptoms and when to see a doctor

Flu symptoms usually start suddenly, around two days after infection. Unlike a cold, flu tends to hit hard and fast.

Common flu symptoms:

  • Fever or chills (not everyone gets a fever)

  • Dry cough and sore throat

  • Headache, muscle and body aches

  • Severe tiredness

  • Runny or stuffy nose

  • Vomiting or diarrhoea, more often in children

Book a medical assessment if you:

  • Are pregnant, over 65, or have a chronic condition

  • Have a child under five with flu symptoms

  • Are not improving after a few days, or feel worse

  • Have symptoms that improve, then come back

Seek emergency care right away for:

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

  • Persistent chest or abdominal pain or pressure

  • Confusion, persistent dizziness or seizures

  • Not passing urine, or signs of severe dehydration

  • In children: fast or laboured breathing, bluish lips, or not waking or interacting normally

In an emergency in the UAE, call 998 for an ambulance.

Step 3: Treat — physician-led flu care

Flu, a cold and other respiratory infections can feel alike, but they are managed differently. A physician can assess your symptoms, check your risk factors and determine the appropriate treatment for you.

For some patients, especially those at higher risk, early assessment matters because certain treatments work best when started soon after symptoms begin. At NovaWell, our DHA-licensed general practitioners review your history and symptoms in an unhurried consultation, and advise on next steps based on your individual needs.

Step 4: Hydrate — fluids as supportive care

Fever, sweating and a reduced appetite can leave you dehydrated, which makes you feel worse. Staying hydrated is an important part of supportive care while you recover.

  • Sip water regularly through the day, rather than large amounts at once

  • Warm drinks, clear soups and oral rehydration solutions can help

  • Watch for signs of dehydration: dark urine, passing very little urine, dizziness or a dry mouth

Where clinically indicated, a physician may recommend additional hydration support. At NovaWell, any IV therapy is physician-prescribed and only offered after a medical assessment.

Step 5: Recover — support that fits your needs

Most people feel better within a few days to two weeks, though tiredness and a cough can linger longer. Recovery support depends on your individual clinical needs.

  • Rest: give your body time, and ease back into work and exercise gradually

  • Stay home while unwell: it protects colleagues, classmates and family

  • Follow up: if you have a chronic condition, flu can make it worse, so check in with your doctor

  • Plan ahead: once you are well, make sure you and your household are vaccinated for the rest of the season

Flu vaccine Dubai: frequently asked questions

When is the best time to get a flu shot in Dubai?

Early in the season, ideally September to October, before flu activity peaks. It is still worthwhile later in the season if you have not been vaccinated yet.

How long does the flu vaccine take to work?

It takes about two weeks after vaccination for your body to build protection.

Is the flu vaccine safe during pregnancy?

Yes. DHA advises vaccination in any trimester. It protects the mother and passes some protection to the newborn.

Do I need a flu shot every year?

Yes. Protection fades over time and the vaccine is updated each season to match circulating strains.

No. You can book directly by phone, WhatsApp or through our website.
